A two-stage screw compressor compresses air in two steps instead of one, cooling the air between stages. This reduces the energy needed per cubic metre, especially at working pressures above 10 bar.
How the Two Stages Work
- The first stage compresses air to an intermediate pressure.
- An intercooler cools the air before the second stage.
- The second stage raises pressure to the final discharge level.
Why It Saves Energy
- Cooler air is denser and easier to compress.
- Lower inter-stage temperature reduces internal leakage.
- Two-stage designs reach GB19153 Grade-1 efficiency.
Where Two-Stage Is Used
- High-pressure industrial air, laser cutting and large central systems.
- Plants with high duty cycles and rising electricity costs.
At what pressure does two-stage become worthwhile?
Generally above 10 bar, where the energy savings clearly outweigh the extra cost.
