Water in Compressed Air Lines: Causes and Solutions

All ambient air contains moisture, and compression concentrates it. When that moisture condenses in the lines it corrodes pipes, damages tools and ruins product quality. Here is how to control it.

Why Water Appears

  • Ambient humidity is compressed and then cools in the piping.
  • The compressor aftercooler cannot remove all moisture alone.
  • Undrained tanks and low points collect liquid water.

How to Remove It

  • Install a properly sized air dryer matched to your pressure dew point.
  • Use automatic drains on tanks, dryers and filters.
  • Pipe air lines with a slight slope and drain legs.

Prevention

  • Keep the compressor room ventilated and cool.
  • Size the dryer for worst-case summer conditions.

Why is there water even with a dryer?

The dryer may be undersized, overloaded, or the dew point set too high for your piping temperature.
