What Is Specific Energy in Air Compressors?

Specific energy measures how much electricity a compressor uses to produce each cubic metre of air. It is the fairest way to compare machines of different sizes and technologies.

What It Means

  • Specific energy = input power divided by free air delivery.
  • Expressed in kW per m³/min.
  • Lower specific energy means a more efficient machine.

Why It Matters

  • It lets you compare efficiency across brands and sizes.
  • A small difference in specific energy costs a lot over 10 years.
  • Grade-1 machines have the lowest specific energy.

How to Use It

  • Ask suppliers for specific energy at your working pressure.
  • Compare under the same pressure and conditions.

What is good specific energy?

It depends on pressure and technology, but Grade-1 screw compressors typically achieve around 6–7 kW per m³/min at 7–8 bar.
