Undersized piping creates pressure drop that forces the compressor to run at higher pressure. Correct pipe sizing reduces energy waste and stabilises pressure.
Why Pipe Size Matters
- Small pipes cause high velocity and pressure drop.
- Pressure drop forces a higher compressor setpoint.
- Higher setpoint means more energy.
Sizing Guidelines
- Keep air velocity low, typically below 6–10 m/s.
- Size for peak flow plus future expansion.
- Use a loop or ring main for large systems.
Material and Layout
- Aluminium or stainless piping resists corrosion.
- Minimise elbows and restrictions.
- Slope lines and add drains.
How much pressure drop is acceptable?
Keep total pressure drop below about 0.3 bar from compressor to point of use for good efficiency.
