Rotary Screw Air Compressor Working Principle Explained

A rotary screw compressor uses two interlocking helical rotors to trap and compress air continuously. This positive-displacement design gives smooth, pulse-free flow and is the workhorse of modern industry.

The Compression Cycle

  • Air enters through the inlet valve into the rotor cavity.
  • As rotors turn, the cavity volume decreases and pressure rises.
  • Compressed air discharges continuously, without pulsation.

Oil Circuit and Cooling

  • Oil seals the rotor clearance, lubricates and removes compression heat.
  • Hot oil is cooled in a heat exchanger and filtered before recirculation.
  • Air leaving the unit passes through an oil separator before delivery.

Control Systems

  • Load/unload, modulation and variable-speed control match output to demand.
  • VSD control gives the best part-load efficiency.

What is the lifespan of a screw air end?

With correct maintenance a screw air end commonly runs 40,000–60,000 hours or more before overhaul.
