Oil carryover contaminates the air supply and increases oil consumption. In a well-maintained screw compressor it should stay under about 3 ppm. Higher levels point to a few specific faults.
Common Causes
- A saturated or damaged oil separator element.
- Overfilled oil level.
- A blocked scavenge return line.
- Discharge temperature running too high.
How to Fix It
- Replace the separator element on schedule.
- Correct the oil level to the proper mark.
- Clean or replace the oil return line and orifice.
- Restore proper cooling to lower discharge temperature.
Prevention
- Use the correct oil grade and change it on time.
- Keep coolers clean and operating temperature stable.
What is normal oil carryover?
Modern screw compressors typically deliver air with oil carryover of 3 ppm or less when the separator is in good condition.
