A compressor that needs frequent oil top-ups is losing oil somewhere. Tracking the cause prevents damage to the air end and downstream equipment.
Where the Oil Goes
- Carryover into the air supply past the separator.
- External leaks at fittings and seals.
- Burning off due to high discharge temperature.
Diagnosis
- Check oil carryover and separator condition.
- Inspect for external leaks.
- Log operating temperature and oil grade.
Fixes
- Replace the separator and clean the return line.
- Repair leaks and correct the oil level.
- Improve cooling and use the correct oil.
How much oil consumption is normal?
Very little. A healthy machine rarely needs top-ups between oil changes.
