How to Size an Air Receiver Tank

An air receiver tank stores compressed air, smooths pressure and reduces compressor cycling, but only when it is sized correctly.

Purpose of the Receiver

The tank dampens pressure pulses, supplies surge demand and allows the compressor to unload instead of constantly cycling.

Sizing Rules of Thumb

A common guide is a tank of a few litres per unit of free air delivery, adjusted upward for heavy surge or large pneumatic tools.

Pressure and Drainage

Match the tank rating to system pressure, install a safety valve and drain condensate regularly to prevent corrosion.

Tell us your flow and surge profile and we will recommend the correct receiver size.
