What Size Air Tank Do I Need? Sizing an Air Receiver

An air receiver tank stores compressed air, smooths pressure and reduces compressor cycling. Correct sizing improves reliability and protects the compressor from short-cycling.

A Simple Rule of Thumb

  • Allow about 1 litre of tank per litre/second of free air delivery.
  • A 1 m³/min compressor commonly pairs with a 300–500 litre tank.
  • Larger tanks help with intermittent high-flow demand.

Why Tank Size Matters

  • Storage covers short demand spikes without pressure collapse.
  • It reduces start/stop cycling that stresses the motor.
  • It provides a buffer while the dryer reaches operating temperature.

Special Cases

  • Add capacity for blast air or other brief high-flow uses.
  • Wet and dry storage on either side of the dryer improves quality.

Can a tank be too large?

A larger tank costs more and takes longer to pressurise, but it rarely hurts reliability. Size it to your demand profile.
