A compressor that will not start usually has an electrical or control issue. This guide works through the causes from the supply to the motor.
Power and Protection
- Check the supply, fuses and circuit breaker.
- Confirm all three phases are present.
- Look for a tripped overload relay.
Controls
- Check the emergency stop and door switch.
- Review the controller for an active alarm.
- Verify the pressure switch allows starting.
Motor and Starter
- Check the contactor and starter coil.
- Test the motor windings and capacitor if fitted.
- Confirm the start command reaches the contactor.
Why does the compressor hum but not start?
That points to a motor or starting fault, such as a failed capacitor, a seized air end or low voltage.
