Air Compressor Oil Carryover: Causes and Solutions

Oil carryover contaminates downstream equipment and products. It usually points to the separator element or the oil system rather than the compressor itself.

Common Causes

A saturated or damaged separator, overfilled oil, wrong oil grade or excessive temperature all increase oil in the air stream.

How to Diagnose

Check oil level and temperature first, then inspect the separator element and drain. Measure the actual carryover before replacing parts.

Fixes

Replace the separator, correct the oil level and grade, and confirm the cooler keeps temperature in range. Add coalescing filtration if the process needs extra protection.
