Laser cutting uses compressed air both as an assist gas and to purge and protect optics. Contaminated or unstable air directly causes poor cut quality. This guide covers the requirements for a reliable laser cutting air system.
Flow and Pressure
- Laser cutting typically needs 8–16 bar depending on the machine.
- Match the compressor FAD to the laser and nozzle configuration.
- Variable-speed control keeps pressure stable during rapid cycling.
Air Quality Is Critical
- Moisture and oil mist contaminate the lens and the cut edge.
- Use a refrigerated or desiccant air dryer and precision filters.
- Aim for pressure dew point below 3 °C and oil carryover under 0.01 mg/m³.
Recommended Setup
- Screw compressor + air receiver + dryer + fine filtration.
- A two-stage machine keeps pressure stable for thick plate cutting.
Can I use a piston compressor for laser cutting?
A piston compressor cannot sustain the flow and causes pressure pulsation. A rotary screw compressor is the right choice for laser cutting.
