Air Compressor Motor Overload Trips

An overload trip protects the motor from damage, but repeated trips mean something is wrong. The cause is usually electrical or mechanical.

Electrical Causes

  • Low voltage or voltage imbalance.
  • Loose or corroded connections.
  • A failing motor or capacitor.

Mechanical Causes

  • High load from a stiff air end.
  • Blocked coolers raising operating temperature.
  • Overpressure against a closed system.

What to Do

  • Measure voltage and current during start and run.
  • Check the overload setting is correct.
  • Inspect the air end and cooling system.

Can I just reset the overload and restart?

Once to test is acceptable, but repeated trips need diagnosis before damage occurs.
