The pressure switch turns the compressor on and off at set pressure points. Understanding how it works helps you set the correct band and diagnose problems.
How It Works
- The switch senses tank pressure with a diaphragm.
- At the cut-in pressure, contacts close and the motor starts.
- At the cut-out pressure, contacts open and the motor stops.
Pressure Band
- The band is the difference between cut-in and cut-out.
- A narrow band gives stable pressure but more cycling.
- A wider band reduces cycling but allows pressure swing.
Adjustment and Faults
- Adjust cut-in and cut-out within safe limits.
- A stuck switch can cause short cycling or no start.
- Replace a faulty switch to protect the motor.
Why does my compressor short cycle?
The pressure band may be too narrow, or the tank is too small for the demand.
