Air Compressor Aftercooler: What It Does

The aftercooler cools compressed air immediately after compression, condensing most of the moisture before it reaches the tank and piping. It is the first stage of air treatment.

How It Works

  • Hot discharge air passes through a heat exchanger.
  • Cooling air or water removes the compression heat.
  • Moisture condenses and is drained away.

Why It Matters

  • Removes most water before the tank and dryer.
  • Protects downstream equipment from heat and moisture.
  • Improves dryer efficiency and life.

Types

  • Air-cooled aftercoolers for small machines.
  • Water-cooled aftercoolers for large systems.
  • Combined aftercooler and separator units.

Is an aftercooler the same as a dryer?

No. The aftercooler removes most heat and some moisture, while a dryer achieves the final low dew point.
