How a compressor is controlled affects part-load energy use more than most people realise. Load/unload and VSD behave very differently when demand varies.
Load/Unload Control
- The machine runs loaded, then unloads when pressure is reached.
- Unloaded running still draws 30–40% of full power.
- Simple and reliable, common on fixed-speed machines.
VSD Control
- Motor speed follows air demand continuously.
- Near-proportional power at partial load.
- Biggest savings when load varies widely.
Which to Choose
- Constant full load: load/unload is adequate.
- Fluctuating load: VSD saves the most energy.
Does VSD save energy at full load?
No. VSD saves energy at partial load. At continuous full load a fixed-speed machine is comparable.
