Cold weather causes frozen condensate, thickened oil and cracked piping. A few simple steps before winter prevent expensive cold-weather failures.
Protect the Machine
- Check the oil grade for low-temperature performance.
- Keep the compressor room above freezing.
- Inspect the intake and enclosure for snow and ice.
Protect the Piping
- Drain all low points and automatic drains.
- Insulate or heat-trace outdoor piping.
- Ensure the dryer dew point is below the coldest ambient.
Startup in Cold Weather
- Warm the room before starting.
- Check for frozen condensate before operation.
- Monitor drains after startup.
Can a compressor freeze?
Condensate in drains and piping can freeze. Keeping the room warm and the air dry prevents most freezing problems.
