Pharmaceutical manufacturing uses compressed air in processes where contamination is unacceptable. The air supply must be dry, oil-free and validated to meet regulatory requirements.
Air Quality Requirements
- Oil-free compression is mandatory for product contact air.
- Desiccant drying to a very low pressure dew point.
- Sterile filtration at the point of use.
System Design
- Redundant compressor capacity for reliability.
- Stainless steel piping to prevent corrosion.
- Continuous dew point and particle monitoring.
Validation and Compliance
- Documented air quality testing and calibration.
- Follow GMP and local pharmacopoeia guidance.
- Regular requalification of the compressed air system.
Can oil-free air ever contain oil?
Ambient air contains traces of oil vapour, so filtration is still used. Certification confirms the compressor adds no oil.
