Repeated shutdowns are the machine protecting itself from a fault. The control panel alarm code is the best clue. Here are the most common reasons a compressor stops unexpectedly.
Protection Trips
- High air-end or discharge temperature.
- High pressure or a faulty pressure switch.
- Motor overload or phase failure.
What to Inspect
- Oil level and cooler condition for temperature trips.
- Pressure settings and the pressure sensor.
- Supply voltage and all three phases.
Control Settings
- Review the start/stop and load/unload pressure band.
- Check the automatic restart and timer settings.
How do I read the fault code?
Check the controller display and refer to the manual. The code usually names the exact trip, such as high temperature or motor overload.
