A compressor that trips its breaker is either drawing too much current or has an electrical fault. This guide works through the causes in order of likelihood.
Electrical Causes
- Undersized supply cable or breaker.
- Low or unbalanced supply voltage.
- A failing motor, contactor or capacitor.
Mechanical Causes
- High starting load from a full pressure tank.
- A stiff or failing air end increasing motor current.
- Low oil causing higher friction.
What to Do
- Check voltage and current with a clamp meter.
- Inspect cable size and connections for heat damage.
- Confirm the breaker and starter are correctly rated.
Can a dirty cooler cause breaker trips?
Indirectly yes. Overheating raises motor current, which can approach the breaker limit.
