Why Your Air Compressor Overheats and How to Fix It

Overheating is one of the most common air compressor faults and a leading cause of shortened component life. The machine usually trips a high-temperature alarm before damage. Here are the causes and fixes.

Common Causes

  • Blocked or dirty oil and air coolers.
  • Low oil level or degraded oil.
  • High ambient temperature or poor ventilation.
  • A failed cooling fan or thermostat.

How to Fix It

  • Clean cooler fins with compressed air and soft brushes.
  • Top up or replace the oil.
  • Improve room ventilation and cooling air flow.
  • Check fan motor, belt and temperature sensors.

Prevention

  • Keep the machine and room clean.
  • Follow the service schedule and log temperatures.

What temperature is too hot for a screw compressor?

Discharge air above about 100–110 °C usually triggers an alarm. The exact limit depends on the model.
